Page rank – Controversial indeed…

Posted by Nathaniel on Aug 30, 2009 in Uncategorized |

Hey guys and girls :) ,

When we talk about ways to up our google page rank, the consensus seems to be that we need good quality conent, update our site regularly and submit it to all the major search engines etc.

However the other day I was checking my inbox and came across an email from Tim and Steve, the guys behind Commision blueprint and Niche blueprint. It refered to a study that they’d carried out over a number of months on several hundred websites – around 200 I think! The idea of the study was to try and see what really mattered when your site is assessed for page rank. The results were controversial to say the least.

Now, it’s important that before we go any further you understand what page rank is all about. Simply put, Page rank is basically how important google think your site is. This can have an impact on all sorts of things such as ppc cost and search engine ranking – But I digress…

You would imagine that the more content you had on your site or the more regularly you update your site then the higher your page rank, but this isn’t necessarily the case!

These are the main findings of the study -

  • Google doesn’t care about the freshness of your content
  • Google doen’t care about the quality of your content
  • Goole doesn’t care if you change the content of the page
  • Google doesn’t care about duplicate content
  • Google doesn’t care about changing hosting providers or servers

Shock shock horror horror!!! I can hear as some people gasp in amazement….”How can he say that”

So if google doesn’t care about any of these things then what do they care about – LINKS! and that’s about it. In Tim and Steve’s study the only thing that effected the page rank of their sites was the number of links leading to a site, as simple as that.

For alot of people this will be pretty hard to swallow. I thought it was a bit extreme the first time I read it. Anyways, take a look for yourselves and let me know what you think – theimblueprint.com

To your success, Nathaniel

Wow Nathaniel,

Interesting findings.

So for Google page rankings we should concentrate on posting comments on “dofollow” blogs and forums and writing articles with backlinks to our blog.

It’s worth remembering though, that it’s actual people and not Google that we are wrighting our blog content for.

Thanks

Indeed John, I wrote a whole post some time ago about give good quality content on your blog. This is the most important factor in getting people to know, like and trust you.

But as far as getting people to see your blog in the first place it sure does help if you have a half decent page rank ;)

It is so clean and fresh looking. I am always worried I overdo it myself, to much content you know. Your blog is just right. I would appreciate if you would pass comment on mine just to confirm I haven’t overdone it. On my blog I am doing a theme on successful internet marketers. Really like to know what you think as I am pretty new to all this layout stuff. I hope one day that I can write about your internet success. Keep up the good work

Wow! Thats an interesting one! And it makes sense as i have seen some Blog very high in the rankings that I wouldn’t consider great.

I’ve heard so much about SEO and page rank etc I have decided not to worry about it. Google seem to amend their algorithms so much now that you could spend half your life trying to keep up.

As John Tanner aluded to above the blog needs to be written for people and not robots, so the content needs to be good so others bookmark it and tweet it – the end of the day theres no getting away from the fact it is people we need to worry about first and foremost.

I love the layout BTW

Nathaniel,

From what I’ve seen these guys are right on the mark… Essentially, the more people comment on my blog the better my Alexa score.

Not sure if that’s the only reason, but certainly a compelling one.

Talk soon,

Rob

Hi Nathaniel,

Good post even though I cannot agree with everything that the guys you refer to are saying.

In fact I only agree with the last point, maybe.

The ranking is not that important anymore but everything else is.

If you believe that Google doesn’t care about duplicate content you’ll be doomed to likely not having your page shown in Google at all.

It is very easily provable.

Have you ever seen a Google search results page where Google says there are hundreds if not thousand of results and showing only the first 25 or 100?

How would you like to be among those not even showing? The reason they are not shown is duplicate content.

By the way you have a number of spam comments here. Especially one guy shows up several times with lip service comments.

Take care,
Vance
